Max Payne 3 è uno sparatutto in terza persona in cui il giocatore veste i panni del protagonista, Max Payne. Una novità della serie, introdotta proprio in Max Payne 3, è il sistema di copertura, che permette ai giocatori di ottenere un vantaggio tattico ed evitare di subire danni dai nemici. Per avanzare nella trama lineare, i giocatori devono affrontare i nemici nei vari livelli. Il gioco presenta filmati interattivi che si integrano perfettamente con il gameplay; non ci sono schermate di caricamento né durante il gioco né durante i filmati.
