『英雄伝説 軌跡の冷鋼III』は、『英雄伝説 軌跡の冷鋼II』の物語の直接的な続編となる、『軌跡』シリーズのメインシリーズ第8作目です。 本作では、現在は軍事教授となったレアン・シュワルツァーと、その教え子たち、そして過去2作に登場した軍事学校の仲間たちが物語の中心となり、特にレアンの出生にまつわる謎や、前作の出来事以降、他の登場人物たちがどのような日々を送ってきたかといったテーマが掘り下げられています。
