これは『メタルギア』シリーズの第4作目です。『メタルギアソリッド2』のストーリーは2つのパートに分かれています。
「タンカー」の章では、ソリッド・スネークが「メタルギア」と呼ばれる極秘の新型核兵器を追って、秘密のタンカーに潜入します。
「プラント編」では、新結成されたフォックスハウンド部隊の雷電が、テロリストに占拠された沖合のプラントに潜入する。
また、この作品には、一人称視点での武器操作、敵を銃口で脅す動作、倒れた敵をつかんで引きずるといった、新たなゲームプレイ要素も盛り込まれている。
