『MARS 2120』は、『スーパーメトロイド』、『キャッスルヴァニア シンフォニー・オブ・ザ・ナイト』、あるいは『グアカメリー！』といった名作にインスパイアされた、魅力的な近接戦闘が特徴のメトロイドヴァニアです。 氷、火、電気といった属性に紐づいた特殊能力を駆使し、アンナ・“サーティーン”・シャーロット軍曹がコロニーを探索し、火星に隠された秘密を解き明かしながら戦いを繰り広げていきます。
