『ボーダーランズ3』は、『ボーダーランズ2』の事件から7年後の世界を舞台にした一人称視点のルートシューターです。プレイヤーは4人の新しいヴォールトハンターの中から1人を選び、銀河系に点在するエイリアンのヴォールトの力を手に入れようとする双子のカルト指導者、トロイとタイリーン・カリプソを阻止するため、複数の惑星を巡ります。 本作の特徴は、プロシージャル生成される武器、最大4人までの協力プレイ、キャラクターごとに複数のアクションスキルを備えた拡張されたスキルツリー、そしてスライディングやマントリングといった新たな移動メカニクスです。
